It’s been a pleasure working in partnership with Our Lady’s ELC, in PKC over the past 3 years. This article documents their Emotion Works journey towards being accredited as one of our first Gold Early Learning settings.
2023: The journey begins
In February 2023 we delivered a large training event at the George Hotel in Perth to launch our PKC partnership with 80 ELC setting champions.
The day covered Emotion Works framework training, resource familarisation and an opportunity for delegates to browse and familiarise themselves with some tried and tested practice examples before making a start on developing their own symbol supported prompt tools to match story books they had brought along from their own settings.

Emotion Works is becoming well embedded within our nursery day and routines with the children using the language and symbols in many different ways. The symbols are being used by the children to selfregister in the morning as well by the staff team to support the emotional wellbeing and regulation of individual children as well as a universal aid. We recently hosted a Stay and Play session with families to experience a range of simple activities exploring different emotions. Information was shared with families on how they can further support their children’s emotions at home through simple activities. Our setting focuses on an emotion each fortnight and ideas and stories linked to the emotion are shared with home to further build children’s understanding of the language along with the emotional cogs.
We have seen a great increase in our tracking data with 86% of our pre-schoolers meeting their Social and Emotional milestones.
Invited to share Practice at our Early Learning Network meeting.

Cogmas / Festive Feelings
We have began our Cogmas celebrations here at Our Lady’s ELC. We have been busy decorating our Cogmas tree using Emotionworks symbols chosen by the children. We have also been looking at the characters and sharing how Christmas makes us feel using lots of fantastic words linked to our emotions, body sensations and triggers.
We have listening to The Funniest Face rhyme and looking at our selves in the bauble from the Christmas tree. We were pulling faces that were happy, tired, grumpy, excited, etc. We then drew pictures of our funny faces.
Lots of giggles could be heard during this Cogmas activity !
Impact on Pupils moving up to P1
A photo shared by Our Lady’s Primary School in their school award application demonstrates how the previous year’s pre-schoolers were taking to the more formal teaching of the Emotion Works Cog Curriculum in this P1 classroom.
In our school award discussion discussion with the Primary Leads about their P1 classes in general this year, they passed on how positive the P1 teachers were about this group of children in terms of being settled, focused and ready for formal learning, which is certainly captured well in this photo, which we initially wondered if it was a snapshot from a P3 class!
