Emotion Works Literacy Programme – Your Questions Answered

WHAT IS THE EMOTION WORKS LITERACY PROGRAMME?

The Emotion Works Literacy Programme is a self-contained 6-month online programme including training and teaching material to help schools introduce Emotion Works to pupils through literacy activities and themes. Learning outcomes for Emotional Wellbeing and Literacy (including vocabulary extension, talking, listening, reading and writing) will be identified across Early, First and Second levels of Curriculum for Excellence.

Online Inservice training is included for whole staff teams, with more in-depth online training and fortnightly check-in support for teachers over the course of the 2021-22 session. All resources and teaching materials are also provided digitally for convenience and online to help keep the package cost down.

WHAT / WHO IS EMOTION WORKS?

Emotion Works is a Scottish educational programme & organisation that puts learning at the heart of emotional wellbeing. Our expertise and reputation in supporting and improving outcomes in emotional education has been established over the past 8 years of operating as a social enterprise and community organisation. Our training and resources are for schools, teachers and educators to help children and young people develop emotional understanding and competencies through a range of learning experiences and curriculum activities.

We currently work with over 600 schools and educational services who share our vision of improving emotional learning and literacy in children and young people. The theory, research and now our own social impact studies demonstrate the benefits of teaching and talking about emotions within educational contexts as having a beneficial, resilience boosting influence on pupil mental health & wellbeing as well as having a positive impact on engagement and learning outcomes more generally.

WHY IS THIS A GOOD TIME TO TRY OUT EMOTION WORKS IN OUR SCHOOL?

The goal of the Emotion Works Literacy Programme is to support schools to focus on improving both Literacy and Wellbeing outcomes at the same time since these are 2 vitally important aspects of education to get right during the Covid Recovery period. We will be running the Literacy Programme as our trial programme throughout the 2021-22 session so you can join in at any point during the session for 6 months. Emotion Works practice examples will be shared on an ongoing basis throughout the year for Early, First & Second level learning that sit perfectly alongside activities to help boost pupil vocabulary and help develop talking, listening, reading and writing skills .

Our last Trial Programme – the Emotion Works Recovery Programme – ran over the course of the 2020-21 session and took a similar overlapping approach to supporting Covid Recovery priorities with Emotion Works teaching when we provided training and teaching material for schools to help pupils process the impact of lockdown and to transition back to school using a Trauma Informed approach.

The coming together and sharing of practice across the hundreds of schools taking part on various social media and networking platforms was a pleasure to facilitate during the Recovery Programme year and we anticipate a similar community spirit and support network to emerge with our Literacy Programme. We are very much looking forward to welcoming new practitioners and schools to the #EWcommunity during the year ahead.

WHEN WILL THE LITERACY PROGRAMME LAUNCH & RUN?

This includes training videos, slideshows, written guidance, web-links and a range of digital resources such as planners, posters and worksheets that can be printed off in school. HOW MUCH DOES THE EMOTION WORKS LITERACY PROGRAMME COST?

The Recovery Programme is free for existing Emotion Works customers, including those in the process of purchasing one of our standard full school packages.

ARE THERE DISCOUNTS FOR LOCAL AUTHORITY BUY-INS?

Yes, Local Authority enquiries are very welcome and positively encouraged as we will be able to offer significant reductions per school for bulk purchases. To enquire in the first instance for a LA quote, please contact office@emotionworks.org.uk or call 0131 669 1122.

I AM ALREADY AN EMOTION WORKS MEMBER – HOW CAN I ACCESS THE LITERACY PROGRAMME?

Anyone with an existing Emotion Works membership can access the Literacy Programme at no extra charge. Simply enter your usual login details to access the members area, and from 10th August onwards you’ll see the Literacy Programme content. This applies to individual memberships as well as schools.

IS THE EMOTION WORKS LITERACY PROGRAMME JUST FOR SCHOOLS IN SCOTLAND?

No, not just Scotland, but since that’s where we’re based and it’s where most of our existing schools are based we are delivering the live online training mid-August and starting the programme in early September to coincide with the return to school after the Summer break for Scottish pupils. However, there will be many schools signing up, starting out and taking part at different times over the course of the year.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LITERACY PROGRAMME PACKAGE AND A STANDARD EMOTION WORKS SCHOOL PACKAGE?

The Literacy Programme is a 6-month self-contained package which provides a focused application of the Emotion Works approach combining Literacy with Wellbeing experiences and outcomes. It’s our second ‘Trial’ programme supporting schools during the Covid Recovery period. It will help educators understand our approach more generally, and then take them step by step through an example roll-out of Emotion Works over a 12-week period with lesson ideas and learning activities using books, stories, poems and other literacy prompts. It will be fully online and there will be an opportunity to join hundreds of other schools taking part via a virtual community of practice.

Emotion Works full school packages provide a comprehensive package of hard copy resources, online training and networking sessions, and an online members platform with hundreds of digital resources, and a ‘pinterest’ style collection of practice examples organised into ideas across different ages and stages, curriculum areas, emotional themes etc. The Literacy Programme content is of course included in all of our existing school packages so if you are looking at a Literacy Programme purchase at this stage you might like to opt for a longer term commitment to using Emotion Works over a 1, 2 or 3 year period by purchasing a full school package. As indicated above, any school who has bought the Literacy Programme trial package and opts to upgrade to a full package thereafter will qualify for 25% off their full school package cost.

CAN I ACCESS THE LITERACY PROGRAMME AS AN INDIVIDUAL SUBSCRIBER?

Yes, anybody who currently has an Individual Subscription with us and would like access to the Literacy Programme content will be able to access it using their usual email address and password for the main Emotion Works website.

New customers wishing to purchase a standard individual package which includes a hard copy resource pack, annual membership to the main Emotion Works website as well as access to the Recovery Programme content can do so here
