Storytelling using the Cogs as a scaffold

A nice example showing how the emotion cogs can assist early story telling. Can’t you just hear this little emotional narrative? This pupil was a keen illustrator but reluctant writer.

I knew this child had a fear of dogs so included the barking dog symbol in amongst a few other potential triggers for our ’emotion cog story’. As anticipated, he chose that symbol to start off his story. To support the story telling discussion I used the laminated ’empty’ cogs and a selection of individual symbols for ideas for him to choose from. Once the cog sequencing was done, I retold his story and he drew it out.

I then attached the cogs and symbols with blu-tac to his drawing sheet, and watched him retell his story with great confidence to the teacher and the group of pupils she was working with.
