Severe and Complex ASN Training Course


Free for existing EW Members

This Emotion Works 4-part Training Course is for staff working with pupils with Severe & Complex ASN at a ‘very early’ level of learning and communication.

Each session will be delivered by Claire Murray (Programme Creator) with input from ASN practitioners Clara Smith (Fairview School), Ailie Davie (East Park School) and others who are currently using Emotion Works with pupils who are at a very early level of learning and communication.


Week 1: An introduction and overview of Emotion Works for work with ‘very Early’ level learners

Week 2: Understanding our Learners – Tools for staff observation, discussion and planning for learning – including practitioner input re. Staff Dialogue Tool

Week 3: Symbol Supported Learning – what’s possible, meaningful and useful? – including practitioner input re. In-the-moment labeling approach and tools

Week 4: Further tools and guidance based on requests from the training group – including practitioner case study input

Each week will provide you with the opportunity to think about your own experiences of working with children and young people who have significant learning needs and to reflect on the particular challenges and joys this brings. A realistic problem solving approach to optimising emotional learning and wellbeing for this group will be encouraged using a set of tried and tested tools and approaches. Input from others already using Emotion Works at a very early level will provide practice demonstrations and examples at each of the sessions.

How to register

For those without Emotion Works membership, there will be a £100 fee for all 4 sessions including accompanying digital resources and tools.
