Accreditation Pathways

Step 1: Emotion Works Introductory Training

Our training can be accessed via face-to face in-service or open sessions, or via our online modules. The associated practice ideas and examples will help you get started using the approach and resources.

Once you are familiar and comfortable working with Emotion Works levels, processes and resources you may decide you’d like to gather your own ideas and practice examples and share them to gain practitioner accreditation.

Step 2. Evidencing Practice using Emotion Works Criteria

The following criteria should be kept in mind as you engage in practice and gather evidence for your accreditation…

Criteria 1: My practice demonstrates awareness of Emotion Works levels and progression.

Criteria 2: My practice makes use of Emotion Works resources and learning processes at appropriate levels

Criteria 3: My practice makes use of meaningful stimuli and contexts for learning/communicating about emotion

Criteria 4: My practice considers and addresses support needs and learning challenges using the Emotion Works Additional Support Framework and tools (required for Additional Support submissions)

  • Relationship considerations/knowing a child well
  • Communication Supports and Adjustments
  • Relevance and Personalisation
  • Managing Arousal Levels


Criteria 5: My practice involves a team approach to planning and delivery (required for Additional Support submissions)

Criteria 6: My practice is reflective and evidences the impact it is having on learning, language development, behaviour and wellbeing


Mainstream/General Practitioners should provide evidence for Criteria 1, 2, 3 and 6.

Additional Support Practitioners should also provide evidence for Criteria 4 and 5.

Step 3. Practitioner Accreditation Submission & Certification

We offer a standard application form for you to include reflections and examples against each criteria, or we’re happy to accept submissions in a variety of formats.

For example, submissions so far have included written reports, powerpoints, scrapbook, video journal and practice discussions.

Please note, a nominal fee of £30 is charged to process practitioner submissions and contribute towards admin and certification costs.

Step 4. Add Mentor Status

If you would like to be recognised as an Emotion Works mentor in your place of work, we ask that 2 colleagues vouch for you as someone who has supported them to get started using Emotion Works ideas and resources.

The process involves each refereree completing a single page questionnaire.


Step 1: Accredited Practitioner with Mentor Status

If you’re interested in becoming an Emotion Works Trainer your first step is to complete our Practitioner Accreditation process, with added mentor status. It’s also likely you’ll be someone who is ‘championing’ Emotion Works within your current role with a proposal for wider roll-out and capacity building.


Step 2. Line Management Support or Personal Commitment to Trainer Process

If you are working in a school, service or other organisational context it is important that you have identified line management support before embarking on the Train-the-Trainer process, and also that there is funding in place to cover the cost of materials, meetings and co-delivery sessions.

If your interest is in delivering Emotion Works in a freelance capacity, then we require your personal commitment to the process and costs,  and ask that you provide a reference from somebody who can recommend your suitability to work in a trainer capacity.

Step 3. Train-the-trainer process including trainer mentoring and co-delivery

Our approach to training trainers currently takes a very personalised approach depending on your familiarity with Emotion Works, your previous experiences delivering training, your setting and location, and the opportunities we have to co-deliver training together.

The trainer mentoring process will continue until you feel well equipped and confident delivering Emotion Works training in the areas of application you know best.

NB – our new ‘previEW’ sessions and online training recordings will help to make Emotion Works content much easier to access, share and cascade.


Step 4. Trainer Network and Ongoing Support

Once you are trainer accredited and delivering Emotion Works training independently within an identified training role, you will be be part of our trainer network providing ongoing training updates, support meetings and online discussion forum.
